Heritage database
One of the project's long-term goals was to increase the access that individuals and communities have to their cultural heritage. Over 100 pieces that were included in, or considered for the exhibit will be listed in this catalogue.
Information is often fragmentary and is based on the museums' original records, augmented by our researchers' comments where possible. Unfortunately most collectors and institutions did not record information about makers and originating communities. Where possible, we have done our best to associate these pieces with regions or cultural groups based on provenance and common styles. |

These are meant as useful clues for future research and not a clear label. It's important to remember that traditions mingled in families, that diverse Indigenous communities had complex kinships systems, and that regional art styles were widely dispersed as the Canadian government's colonial activity intensified in the late 1800s.
We hope that this index will inspire future artists and researchers to continue the work of reclaiming traditions and recovering the past. You can contact the museums involved to request access to their collections.
