Hudson's Bay land office
The Main Street of today and the Main Street of 1884 sport a number of differences. As the centre of town, Main Street has gone through many iterations over the course of its life, and the buildings that once occupied the lands running astride it have therefore been largely lost to time.
One such building was the Hudson's Bay Land Office, once located at approximately 150 Main Street.
According to the 1990 study titled "Archaeological Resources at the Manitoba Sports Federation Building Site (200 Main Street)" by archaeologists Sid Kroker and Pamela Goundry, the Hudson's Bay Company Land Office was built around 1875 to house the land and survey officers of the Company. Though the Land Office is marked on the map below as being at 145 Main Street, the study and further investigation of business directories from the time indicate that after 1883, the building was re-numbered, becoming 150 Main Street.
Fun Fact! Stone from the outer walls of Upper Fort Garry was said to be recycled and used in the construction of the Hudson's Bay Land Office.
