Other than Queen of the United Kingdom, Victoria was also Empress of the largest colonial empire to ever exist. She was a living symbol of British power, and statues (such as the one that stood at the Manitoba legislature until 2020) often show her holding the globe in her palm.

This type of "candid" or active pose is very rare for the mid-1800s. Most studio portraits were stiff and formal, in part because subjects had to stay motionless for long developing times.
