Mary sinclair inkster3/22/2470
Photo by Simon Duffin Winnipeg 1874-1875 This photo shows matriarch Mary Sinclair Inkster at the age of 70 or 71. She is wearing an expensive, imported, watered-silk gown that would have glimmered as she moved. Around her neck is a brooch that is still in our museum: It holds a braid of hair under glass, likely belonging to a deceased family member.

a sinclair woman?3/22/2471
c.1890-1910 This photo as often shared as an image of Margaret Nahovway Sinclair. It is more likely one of her grand-daughters: Jane Inkster Tait or Marak Inkster near the end of their lives.
Nahovway died in 1863, when photography was still virtually unknown in Red River. The building behind her appears to date from around 1900 as does her clothing and the chair she's seated in. |
A sinclair grandson3/22/2474
Photo by Dore Gallery San Francisco, California c.1890-1900 "To grandma with the warmest affections of a distant grandson."
Given its origin in California, this photo may be linked to Captain Colin Sinclair or his brother James Sinclair, but it's not clear who "grandma" could be. The Dore Gallery operated from the late 1800s until at least 2019. |
3/22/2475
Photo by Knight & Johnson San Francisco, California c.1880s As in the previous photo, this young woman is likely connected to the family of Captain Colin Sinclair or the descendants of James Sinclair. As far as we know Colin did not have children, and there are no identified images of his wife.
